Student Transportation Safety (SB 88 Compliance)

Overview

Senate Bill 88 (SB 88), effective July 1, 2025, establishes minimum health, safety, and oversight standards for individuals transporting students for school-related activities.

This law applies to both district employees and contracted providers and covers most forms of student transportation, including:

  • Home-to-school transportation

  • Field trips and athletics

  • After-school and extracurricular programs

  • Preschool and childcare-related transportation

COJUSD is committed to ensuring all student transportation meets these safety requirements.

Driver Requirements

All compensated drivers transporting students must meet the following:

  • Be at least 18 years old with a valid California driver’s license

  • Pass criminal background checks and fingerprint clearance

  • Complete tuberculosis screening

  • Maintain a clean driving record

  • Pass drug and alcohol testing

  • Complete a medical examination (within 2 years)

  • Complete initial and ongoing safety training, including:

    • First aid

    • Safe driving practices

    • Emergency procedures

Drivers transporting larger groups must also hold the appropriate commercial driver’s license (CDL).
