The Awareness Phase represents an introduction to the NGSS, the initial planning of systems implementation, and establishment of collaborations.

The Transition Phase is the building of foundational resources, implementing needs assessments, and establishing new professional learning opportunities.

The Implementation Phase fully aligns curriculum, instruction, and assessments, and effectively integrates these elements across classrooms.

The Refinement Phase represents refining science teaching and learning in every classroom every day.

Teacher Professional Learning

Include the following concepts in professional development activities:  

  • Curricular and instructional shifts
  • 3-D teaching
  • Science and Engineering Practices
  • Performance Expectations
  • Cross Cutting Concepts
  • Alignment with the Common Core State Standards
  • Local assessments and instructional materials as well as materials from national organizations
  • California Environmental Principles and Concepts (EP&Cs)

Convene a leadership (steering) team of grade level representatives to guide the professional learning process.

Develop grade level professional learning plans for CA NGSS (calendar dates and activities)

Support, and revise as needed, grade level plans for CA NGSS professional learning.

Evaluate effectiveness of professional learning plans and teacher practice.

Provide awareness workshops to understand the California NGSS Standards to all teachers.




Provide transition professional learning sessions for teachers to develop NGSS practices


Provide workshops to understand the California NGSS Curriculum Framework to all teachers.

Provide implementation professional learning sessions for teachers.

Engage in PLCs and Instructional Rounds for ongoing professional learning.

Administrator Professional Learning

Provide awareness workshops to understand the California NGSS Standards and instructional shifts

Provide workshops to understand the California NGSS Curriculum Framework and instructional shifts

Provide workshops to lead implementation of NGSS at each site

Use PLCs to evaluate and strengthen implementation of NGSS at each site.

Curriculum - ALL

Identify gaps in curriculum

Collaborate and build unit folders for Science lessons in Google Docs

Continue to build units and lessons, implementing, and refining instruction

Teacher share and demonstrate model lessons

Curriculum 6-12

Discuss Middle School and High School learning progression models

Decide on Middle School and High School learning progression model

Implement Middle and High School selected learning progression model

Pilot units/lessons from possible curriculum adoption.

Teacher share and demonstrate model lessons


Implement new curriculum (If adopted)

Develop transitional curriculum/pacing maps

Classroom Instruction

Understand the NGSS shifts in instruction

Technology for Learning

Build website for NGSS implementation (digital resources for teachers)

Maintain and update NGSS implementation website


Identify technology needs for implementing NGSS

Provide tech training and support to use technology for learning in Science

Continue to provide tech training and support to use technology learning in Science.

Resources for Implementation

Use the resources available on the CA NGSS Digital Center, My Digital Chalkboard, Achieve, National Science Teachers Association, and other sources.

Identify classroom resources needed for model classroom implementation

Investigate and select instructional materials for all grade levels

Evaluate resources and implementation

Identify funding needed and sources for 2015-16

Identify funding needed and sources for 2016-17

Identify funding needed and resources for 2017-18

Identify funding needed and resources for 2018-19

Performance Assessments

Examine sample performance assessments to understand the shift in assessment.

Continue to study PAs for NGSS.  Create one performance assessment per semester.

Create remaining performance assessments.

Participate in the state test development process (pilot testing, field testing, item/task scoring, etc.).
